About engineered wood

Why engineered wood suits so many Brooklyn homes

Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer bonded to a plywood or other stable core. From above it looks and feels like a solid wood floor, but the cross-layered core moves much less with humidity. That makes it a strong choice for the steam-heated winters and humid summers of New York buildings.

Many engineered floors can be floated or glued down, so they work over concrete slabs and the sound-control underlayment that many co-ops and condos require. Wider planks are also easier to make stable in engineered form, which is why most wide-plank oak floors are engineered. Before you choose, compare engineered and solid wood and see how the wear layer affects future refinishing.

What the specifications on each product page tell you

  • Dimensions and plank format: width changes how busy or calm a room reads
  • Species and color: European and white oak take finishes differently from red oak or hickory
  • Finish and texture: matte and wire-brushed surfaces hide everyday scuffs better than high gloss
  • Installation method: floating, glue-down or nail-down, as listed by the manufacturer

Specifications on each product page are as listed by the manufacturer. Confirm installation requirements for your subfloor with our team before ordering.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?

Yes. The surface you walk on is a layer of real hardwood. What differs from solid hardwood is the core underneath, which is built for stability.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Usually yes, if the wood wear layer is thick enough. Thicker wear layers allow one or more full sandings; very thin ones may only allow a light screen and recoat.
