Choosing wire-brushed and textured hardwood

What does wire-brushing actually do?

A wire brush runs along the board and removes some of the softer wood between the harder growth rings. The grain stands up slightly, so you can feel it underfoot. Light catches the texture, which breaks up the surface and makes fine scratches, scuffs and dust far less noticeable than on a smooth, shiny floor. It works especially well on open-grained woods like oak.

Wire-brushed, hand-scraped or distressed?

Wire-brushing is the subtlest of the three. Hand-scraped boards have shallow, irregular scoops across the surface that recall old hand-worked floors, and they look at home in row houses and rustic rooms. Distressed floors add nicks and marks for a heavily aged look. Here, 18 floors are wire-brushed, 7 hand-scraped and 3 distressed, and several Ferma maples combine hand-scraping with brushing.

Is a textured floor harder to clean?

Slightly. Fine grit can settle into the grain, so a vacuum with a soft brush head or a microfiber dry mop works better than a broom. As with any wood floor, skip steam mops and wet mopping. Our care guide explains what to use.

Who gets the most from a textured floor?

Households with dogs, kids or heavy foot traffic. The matte finish on most of these floors adds to the effect. If you prefer a sleek, minimal room, the smooth boards in the same lines give you the same species with a cleaner look. See flooring for pets and kids, or browse all engineered wood.

Does wire-brushed flooring hide scratches?

It hides light, everyday scratches well because the texture breaks up reflections. Deep gouges from dropped objects or dragged furniture still show, so felt pads under furniture are still worth using.

Can a wire-brushed floor be refinished?

Sanding removes the texture, so a full refinish leaves a smooth floor unless it is brushed again. Many owners instead recoat the finish when it starts to look worn. Check the manufacturer's guidance for the specific product.

Is textured flooring comfortable barefoot?

Yes. Wire-brushing leaves a gentle texture most people barely notice underfoot. Hand-scraping is more noticeable but still smooth to the touch, since the surface is finished and sealed.
