Choosing european oak flooring

How is European oak different from American white oak?

European oak is often milled with a calmer, more even grain than American white oak, with fewer bold cathedral patterns. It is commonly sold in wide, long planks and finished in soft matte or oil-look coatings. American white oak tends to show a little more grain movement. Both are durable, so the choice is mostly about look. Our wood species guide compares them with other woods.

Which tones are in this collection?

Eight floors are in Ferma's Dove Mountain range, a soft, weathered gray-brown, and seven are tan. The rest include light gray, light white gray, beige, light brown and brown. Pale grays and white-washed tones look natural in modern apartments with white walls. Tan and light brown feel warmer beside wood cabinetry and older trim.

Smooth or wire-brushed?

Thirteen floors are smooth and nine are wire-brushed. Wire-brushed European oak has a tactile, open grain that hides small scratches and suits households with kids or dogs. Smooth boards look more refined and work well in bedrooms and living rooms with lighter traffic.

Can European oak go over a concrete slab?

Most floors here list floating, glue-down and nail-down installation, so they work over a wood subfloor in a row house or over a slab in an apartment building. Wide boards are more sensitive to humidity swings and subfloor flatness, so follow the manufacturer's acclimation and moisture guidance. If your building has sound rules, check underlayment requirements before ordering.

Is European oak a specific species?

European oak usually refers to Quercus robur and Quercus petraea, grown across Europe. It is a different species from American white oak, though the two look and perform similarly on a floor.

Does European oak change color over time?

Oak slowly darkens and warms with light exposure, and rugs that never move can leave lighter patches. Shifting rugs and furniture now and then helps the floor age evenly.

Is engineered European oak good for apartments?

Yes. Engineered construction is generally more stable than solid wood through dry winters and humid summers, and it can be floated or glued over concrete. Check your building's alteration agreement and the product's installation instructions.
