Choosing wide plank engineered hardwood

Why engineered rather than solid for wide boards?

Solid wood expands and shrinks across its width as humidity changes, and the wider the board, the bigger the movement. That can show up as gaps in winter when steam heat dries the air and as cupping in humid summers. Engineered boards bond a real wood top layer to a cross-layered core that resists this movement, which is why most wide plank floors sold today are engineered. Read engineered vs solid wood for the details.

How wide should you go?

A 7.5 inch board looks generous without dominating a typical bedroom. Nine to 9.5 inches suits living rooms and open plans. The 12 inch boards make a strong statement in large rooms and lofts with long, uninterrupted runs of floor. In a narrow hallway, count how many boards fit across before choosing the widest option. Our wide plank guide has more.

What does the subfloor need?

Wide boards are less forgiving of dips and humps, so flatness matters. In a row house with wood joists, nail-down over a sound plywood subfloor is common. Over a slab, glue-down, or floating with the right underlayment, after a moisture check, is typical. Requirements vary by product, so follow each one's instructions.

Which texture suits a wide plank?

Wide boards show more of each board's grain, so texture changes the look a lot. This collection mixes smooth (27 floors), wire-brushed (13) and hand-scraped (5). Smooth wide oak looks clean and modern, wire-brushed hides wear in busy homes, and hand-scraped leans rustic.

Do wide plank floors gap more?

All wood floors move a little with the seasons. Engineered wide planks move far less than solid wide planks, and keeping indoor humidity in the range the manufacturer recommends keeps seasonal gaps small.

Can wide plank engineered wood go in a kitchen?

Many people use it in kitchens, with the understanding that spills get wiped up quickly and standing water is avoided. Check the product's guidance, and compare wide plank vinyl if you want more water tolerance.

How much extra should I order for wide planks?

Plan for waste from cuts and from setting aside boards you would rather keep out of the middle of the room. Our guide to ordering flooring explains how to figure the overage for your layout.
