Wide plank vinyl flooring

Every floor in this collection is a 9 inch wide vinyl plank. There are 68 of them, all from MSI Surfaces, mostly blonde and brown, with some light and dark grays and a few beiges. Wider planks mean fewer seams and a calmer floor, which suits open living areas and anyone who likes the look of wide-board oak but wants vinyl's water tolerance.

Choosing wide plank vinyl flooring

Why choose a 9 inch plank?

A wider board shows more of its grain pattern and puts fewer lines across the room. In an open kitchen and living area that reads as relaxed rather than busy. It is the same reason wide-board engineered oak is popular, but in vinyl it comes with spill resistance and a lower-maintenance surface.

Will wide planks work in a small room?

Often, yes. People worry that wide boards overwhelm a small space, but fewer seams can make a compact room feel calmer. Direction matters more than width: run the planks along the longest wall or toward the main light source. In a very narrow hallway, where only a few boards fit across, a wide plank can look chunky, so try a sample in place.

Does the subfloor matter more with wide planks?

Yes. A wider, longer plank bridges dips instead of following them, so a slab or wood subfloor that is out of flat can lead to hollow spots or joints that will not stay closed. Manufacturers set flatness tolerances for this reason. Read our guide to subfloor leveling and check each product's instructions.

Which color suits a wide plank?

This collection is mostly blonde (32 floors) and brown (22). Blonde wide planks give a bright, Scandinavian look that suits newer apartments. Brown feels closer to a traditional wide-board floor in an older house. Grays and beiges fill in for cooler or softer schemes. For the bigger picture on board width in wood and vinyl, see wide plank flooring.

Do I need more extra material with wide planks?

Wide planks can mean a little more waste at walls and doorways because offcuts are larger. Our guide on how much flooring to order explains how to figure the overage for your layout.

Can wide plank vinyl go in a kitchen?

Yes. Vinyl is a common kitchen choice because it handles spills well, and fewer seams mean fewer places for water to sit. You should still wipe up standing water rather than leave it.

Floating or glue-down for wide planks?

Every floor here can go either way. Floating suits most rooms in a home, while glue-down is often preferred for large open areas, rooms with big temperature swings or heavy rolling loads. Follow the specific product's instructions.
