Choosing light hardwood flooring

Which light tone should you choose?

Light floors fall into three broad groups. Natural tones, like clear-finished maple and Canadian oak, are warm and slightly golden. Pale grays and white-washed oaks are cooler and look crisp beside white walls. Beige and light brown sit in between and blend easily with existing trim and furniture. Judge samples in the actual room, since warm bulbs push natural tones toward yellow.

Do light floors make a room feel bigger?

They reflect more light, which helps narrow rooms, garden apartments and rooms with one window feel more open. They also hide dust and pet hair better than dark floors. What they show is dark grit and the occasional stain, so mats at the entrances are worth having. Read our room light and floor color guide for more.

Engineered or solid?

Most of this collection is engineered, which can be floated or glued over concrete slabs and is more stable through steam-heated winters. Solid hardwood is generally nailed down over a wood subfloor and suits row houses and detached homes where you may want to sand and refinish several times over the years. Compare the two in engineered vs solid wood, or browse solid hardwood.

Will a light wood floor age well?

All wood changes color with light. Oak tends to warm, maple can drift toward amber, and gray stains may soften. Rugs left in one place for years can leave lighter outlines, so move them now and then.

Are light wood floors hard to keep clean?

They are easier than dark floors for everyday dust and hair, but they show dark spills and tracked-in dirt. A matte finish, which many of these floors have, also helps hide footprints.

Do light floors work in a traditional brownstone?

They can. A natural or light brown oak in a narrower width usually suits period trim and doors better than a very pale gray. Bring a photo of your woodwork when you compare samples.

Should my floor match my kitchen cabinets?

Usually not exactly. Cabinets and floors in the same tone can blur together. A floor a few shades lighter or darker, or with a different undertone, lets each read clearly.
