About solid hardwood

Is solid hardwood right for your room?

Solid hardwood is one piece of timber from top to bottom, usually about 3/4 inch thick, and it is nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor. Because the whole board is wood, it can be sanded and refinished many times, which is why well-kept solid floors in Brooklyn houses and brownstones often last as long as the building.

It is the right choice when you have a sound plywood or plank subfloor over joists, steady indoor humidity and no plans to install over concrete. In most apartment buildings, where floors sit on concrete slabs and boards are often required to float over sound-control underlayment, engineered wood is usually the better fit. Our guide to engineered or solid wood in a New York apartment walks through the decision.

What to check before you order

  • What the floor sits on now: wood subfloor over joists, or concrete
  • Whether the room has radiant heat (most solid floors are not approved over it)
  • Your building's alteration agreement, if you live in a co-op or condo
  • How the new boards will meet existing floors in hallways and doorways

We carry more species, widths and finishes than we list online. Bring a photo or a sample of your existing floor to the showroom and we will look for the closest match.

Can solid hardwood go over concrete?

Generally not directly. Solid boards need a wood subfloor to be nailed to, and slabs can carry moisture. Over concrete, engineered wood or vinyl plank is usually recommended.

How many times can a solid hardwood floor be refinished?

A typical 3/4 inch board can be sanded several times over its life, depending on how much wood sits above the tongue and how heavy each sanding is. A floor professional can check how much is left.
